The first few months of 2013 were a whirlwind of stressing out about school, making new friends, traveling to new places, and finally learning to be myself! There are so many different aspects of being who you are. Style, personality, opinions, humor. Whatever it be, letting your individuality jump out is an essential part of growing up and creating an identity. As a fifteen year old teenager influenced so much by New York socialites or even anonymous beauties I walk by on the street, being "myself" is a struggle. I find that I act differently around certain crowds, and try my hardest to impress others. Now impressing people that you may find important or "better" is a natural instinct, but going so far as to changing your personal opinions or thoughts is NOT going to make someone like you better. Nobody enjoys a one-sided conversation that includes you agreeing with everything the other person says. As long as you don't put down the other person's opinions, people love to meet people with different perspectives on things. Not only does it let you be yourself, but it opens up conversation. If you really want someone to like you and become friends with you, you need to be comfortable around them because if the friendship blooms, it shouldn't be based on false similarities or opinions. If someone dismisses you as a possible friend because you happen to not like the color yellow or you enjoy to wear flats more than heels, that person should not be in your life anyway! I know it may seem petty, but I know that when put in an intimidating situation, I "lie" about little things just to impress the other person.
I'm a huge believer in that your personal style shows a lot about who you are. I know that everybody (yes, even celebrities!) draw inspiration from other people. You know that pang of jealousy you feel when you see a picture of Olivia Palermo or any other fashion crazy celebrity in the PERFECT outfit? I instantly online shop and try to find something similar to what they're wearing. As humans we always want what we don't have, and seeing someone in an outfit we love drives us to want it! Taking inspiration from style icons is a great idea to spruce up your fashion choices, but if you find yourself buying exact replicas of designer bags or shoes worn by someone else, think of buying some original things! I know it feels so good to finally have something you've been eyeing with an envious eyes in the magazines, but you'd be surprised to find the satisfaction in buying a new outfit that you nor nearly anyone else has seen! It's another way to show individuality, while also getting a great original outfit!
I'm ready for the last few months of the year, and I'm hoping to go far with my new perspective on things. You don't see any truly successful people copying anyone or pretending to be something they're not. They all learned to do something that may seem so little and so easy, but in all honesty might be the hardest thing to do : Be themselves!
